ABOUT COSPLAY

DEFINITION: Cosplay, a portmanteau of the words costume play, is a performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character or idea. Cosplayers often interact to create a subculture centered on role play and a broader use of the term "cosplay" applies to any costumed role play in venues apart from the stage. Any entity that lends itself to dramatic interpretation may be taken up as a subject and it is not unusual to see genders switched. Favorite sources are manga and anime, comic books and cartoons, video games, and live-action films.

The word Cosplay is used to define a particular type of costume worn by a rising sub-culture of video game and anime enthusiasts. The word itself is simply a combination of the words "costume" and "play". Cosplayers dress up like their favorite characters, often playing the part by acting out populars scenes for the character and expressing the same mannerisms. The characters portrayed range from video games like Devil May Cry to anime and manga like chobits.

The rapid growth in the number of people cosplaying as a hobby since 1990 has made the phenomenon a significant aspect of popular culture in Japan and some other parts of Asia and in the Western world. Cosplay events are common features of fan conventions and there are also dedicated conventions and local and international competitions, as well as social networks, websites and other forms of media centered on cosplay activities.

COSPLAY CONVENTIONS - GETTING COSPLAY EXPERIENCE INTO THE HEARTS OF PEOPLE:
As the popularity of cosplay has grown, many conventions have come to feature a contest surrounding cosplay that may be the main feature of the convention. Contestants present their cosplay, and often to be judged for an award, the cosplay must be self-made. The contestants may choose to perform a skit, which may consist of a short performed script or dance with optional accompanying audio, video, or images shown on a screen overhead. Other contestants may simply choose to pose as their characters. Often, contestants are briefly interviewed on stage by a master of ceremonies. The audience is given a chance to take photos of the cosplayers. Cosplayers may compete solo or in a group. Awards are presented, and these awards may vary greatly. Generally, a best cosplayer award, a best group award, and runner-up prizes are given. Awards may also go to the best skit and a number of cosplay skill subcategories, such as master tailor, master weapon-maker, master armourer, and so forth.

WORLD IMPACT: Cosplayers are the most photographed items at conventions, fairs and expos. They bring value and fun to any convention or gathering. People love to see reality of a costume sink in that streatches make believe to a reality you can touch and feel. Disney does it with their princess's, mickey mouse and freinds and more. Somehow constumes even if it is Santa strikes a chord with people and they love it. People love to have their favorite super heroes show up for their kids bithday. Kids and Adults alike seem to just love cosplay.. Some companies have made such a professionalism out of cosplay it is a show or theater. Others dress up for fun and visit conventions and gatherings, and at times sign autographs, do movies and other exciting things that land their way.

'Cosplanet' Documentary Charts the Origins and Growth of Cosplay Culture

Cosplay - fans dressing up as their favorite characters, or as mix-and-match variations on multiple characters and ideas - is a big part of comic book culture, and becoming moreso every year. A new documentary, Cosplanet: The Evolution of Cosplay, intends to explore the origins and growth of the subculture, and co-director/producer Patrick Meaney talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the project.

INTERESTING COSPLAY FACTS

WHAT DOES COSPLAY STAND FOR?
Cosplay is an abbreviation of Costumed Roleplay. In short, to cosplay is to dress as a character from a Japanese animated TV show or a video game, and to act as that character. Most Cosplay is done at at parties and Anime Conventions, which have large Cosplay contests as main events.

WHAT IS COSPLAY ABOUT?

I have found that people cosplay for a multitude of reasons. Be it love of a character, enjoying the attention of being in an elaborate costume or portraying a loved character, or the appreciation from peers from completing a complex costume... there are many motivations for donning spandex or cape.

'Cosplay is about two things.

First it's about expressing the things you love. Those people who play DnD and wear wizard hats while they do it should understand. It's one thing to run around talking about how you love Assassin's Creed and it's another entirely to be like 'whoo I'm an assassin!' (or assassin's girlfriend/future wife, as the case may be, but that's because she was easier for me to pull off and I wanted to do a more complex costume.) Let's face it, a lot of us wish we could live in video games/tv shows/movies/comic books/animes, because it's so interesting. And it's nice to devote a part of yourself to something. Making cosplay takes a ton of time but that's half the fun for me. It sort of consumes your life for a bit.

The second part is community. I've met a ton of amazing people who like the same thing I do because we saw each other across the room wearing shows that the other one liked. And, yes, having your picture taken is a lot of fun, but a lot more of the pictures that are taken are not 'wow you look hot/badass (though, yes, that does happen) but OH MY GOD YOU'RE ____!! I LOVE THAT CHARACTER/SHOW/ETC and that's just awesome.

CRAZY COSPLAY FACT:
French Queen Marie Antoinette had a fully functioning peasant village built on the grounds of Versailles. She loved strolling the village in simple shepherdess garb pretending to live a simple life milking cows or sheep, which were carefully maintained and cleaned by the servants.

WHO COINED THE WORD COSPLAY?
First of all, cosplay did not start in Japan and is not an original concept of the Japanese. The actual word "cosplay" was invented by a Japanese reporter, yes, but that is the extent of Japanese involvement in the creation of the hobby. 'Cosplay did not suddenly appear,' says Nobuyuki Takahashi. He should know: Takahashi helped invent the word itself.Takahashi's cosplay article appeared in the June 1983 issue of My Anime. It covered the fans who dressed up as manga and anime characters from the Comiket convention in Tokyo. In 1984, Nov Takahashi was sent to report on the goings-on of the '84 WorldCon, being held that year in Los Angeles, CA. He coined the word "cosplay" to describe what he saw going on at WorldCon - people wearing costumes in the halls, and a stage masquerade featuring the biggest and brightest of the costumes of the weekend. In Japanese linguistics, they often form composite words ("portmanteau") out of loanwords from other languages, such as English; in this case, he took "costume" and "play" and smashed them together to try to describe what he was seeing at WorldCon. What is important to note is that while we can only speculate on what he meant by "play," what is almost certain is that he did not necessarily refer to "acting," since the only stage performing at WorldCon is the masquerade, in which performances did not necessarily involve spoken dialogue. In fact, many of them that year didn't.
